Clinton: "Path to Peace, Prosperity and Progress."
Done. Finally.
You know, as critical as I have been of Hillary during this campaign, I do feel that she deserves a salute on her way out. She's been an influential voice and powerfully visible figure for progressive causes for a couple of decades, and her impact on the American political scene cannot be overstated.
As a politician, Hillary Clinton is the perfect example of a Democrat with a Spine; a rare creature indeed. She plays hardball, doesn't pull punches, and is obviously willing to fight to her last dying breath for the causes she believes in. The other cringing, capitulating congress critters who call themselves Democrats (with a few exceptions) can, and should, learn a great deal from her.
She gave a speech today (I believe) which C&L reports will be running in full on MSNBC today at 4 o'clock Eastern time, in which she officially backs Obama in his candidacy for the Presidency. It was one of her better pieces of oratory, and hopefully will mend some of the rifts in the Democratic Party (real or media-made) and prime the Party to stomp McBush this November. She referred to an Obama victory as "the path to peace, prosperity and progress" for the country, and I can't think of a better way to put it. It might be shallow and calculating of me, but when I hear that line, I think "campaign slogan," and I like it. It'll sell.
- Peace; getting our kids out of that bloodthirsty desert where Bush took the modern conservative movement to die.
- Prosperity; a break from the financially suicidal policies of "rob from the poor to feed the rich" which have dominated our economy, dictated to and implemented by Dubya from the boardrooms of Houston, Galveston, and New York.
- Progress; providing real care for our veterans, returning sanity to out international policy, ensuring equal rights for all Americans (protecting them from Big Money lobbyists who drown out their voices and from archaic social oppression more at home in Torquemada's Spain than a modernized nation), and hopefully provide adequate health care for our citizenry.
The list obviously can go on and on, listing the multitude of criminally catastrophic fuck-ups perpetrated by the Buch Cartel, but the point is, any Democrat (hell, almost any sentient being) can and will do a better job of piloting this country than George "All Hat, No Cattle" Bush, and John McSame represents nothing more than a third term of Neocon blood lust and bullshit, except this time the military service claimed by the candidate actually occurred.
So, well done Hillary. Way to stop drilling holes in the hull before the boat actually goes down. She sure did make me nervous, waiting until the train of a "sundered party" was damn near on top of us to jump off the tracks, but she did jump. I really can't condone that kind of selfish campaigning, but its over now, the party is in good shape behind a strong nominee, and as they say, no blood, no foul.
EDIT: Yeah yeah, I just noticed the crazy hodge-podge of metaphors in that last paragraph. Whatever, I like em, they'll stay.

Sounds Like Hill's Out On Saturday...
Via Mother Jones Blog, Jonathon Stein says the Clinton campaign will hold an event in Washington DC to thank her supporters and throw some support Obama's way.
Finally an end to this madness, it is about time! Now let's get the general election excitement started! 5 months of exciting stuff to come.
I'm sure the Republicans will play up the Obama-Islam/Crazy Liberal/inexperienced/Hussein vein, as Barack himself has acknowledged, but I think they'll keep it rather tame otherwise.
But that doesn't mean this race will be friendly by any means. The 527's are going to turn this election into a culture war. The groups may mask the true message behind the curtain of the madrasa, Rev. Wright, quotes concerning islam, and quotes his wife has made; but the message will be clear, Barack Obama isn't white.
My only hope is that it isn't affective. I feel like it shouldn't matter, I know I'm going to support him no matter what his color. There have been appointees (which granted is a wholly different mechanism with lower standard of replacement) from different countries who serve this country to their best (I'm looking at you California), and there will be plenty more as the cultural makeup of the country shifts (I know, didn't all you conservatives just squirm a little). I hope the population will be able to see past the racial tensions and cultural divides the ads will try to conjure up (on both sides of the fence) and focus on today. Are you better today than eight years ago? Realize that one candidate offers connections to the same think tank and political stronghold that has brought us to the present, while the other offers a new perspective. Its your job to truly look into the facts and find out whether that alternative perspective offers better than the future our current policies hold. Maybe I'm just infected with the liberal spew but I'm pretty sure I don't want anymore of what the Republicans are selling.

Finally
I know its nothing official, but damn, its nice to see someone in the mainstream media admit what the folks in Left Blogistan have been saying for months.
Obama will be the Democratic Nominee.
Man, that felt good to say. Now if only Clinton would get the message. I do understand her campaign's rhetoric though, they are trying to pump up their voters. The coach of a lagging underdog team doesn't come out before a game and declare his intentions to get his ass handed to him, he says that they're in it to win it, and that the scoreboard will decide the game. Clinton is doing the same thing. She is a relatively intelligent, self-aware homo sapien, so she must know she will not win, but she has to give her "Inches" speeches before the game.
Man, I love that speech. Crappy movie, but awesome scene.
I expect a concession in the next few days.
But I've been wrong before.

The FL & MI Fiasco
The question of what to do with the Democratic delegates from Michigan and Florida is being hashed out today. The Rules Committee is holding a hearing to decide what the punishment should be, if any, for those two states BREAKING PARTY RULES and moving their primaries ahead of the official party schedule.
Clinton supporters are whining that all those votes should be counted, despite the fact that Obama didn't campaign in those states (which Clinton did, which is a violation of those same party rules), and wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan. The funny thing is, these are the same rules that the Clinton Campaign AGREED to before the votes began, and now that it looks like she may be hurt by them, Oh the INJUSTICE! The HORROR! The DISENFRANCHISEMENT!!
Clinton, and your banshees at the hearing today, sit down and shut up.

MSNBC: "US opts out of cluster bomb treaty"
Did ya'll get that title? I almost shot oatmeal out of my nose when I read that (I was eating breakfast, oatmeal is not some disturbing euphemism). Cluster bombs are a pretty nasty piece of military hardware, capable of wreaking havoc over a large area due to the deadly "bomblets" which shower over the target after the initial detonation. Their military value is obvious, but the downside is the usual tragedy of civilian woe.Their devastating impact on the battlefield often comes at a terrible cost to civilians afterward, including farmers who strike unexploded “bomblets” in their fields or children who mistake the objects for playthings.
Playthings? I mean, American parents will sue someone to smithereens if their child scrapes their knee on the playground, but evidently we have no problem letting all those brown "fer-ner's" kids play baseball with unexploded military ordinance. Our nation, along with Russia, China, Israel, India and Pakistan, decided not to sign the ban, despite over 100 countries adopting the measure. Evidently, our nation would rather let a couple thousand more kids die than give up one of our many toys. Our rationale:While the United States shares the humanitarian concerns of those in Dublin, cluster munitions have demonstrated military utility, and their elimination from US stockpiles would put the lives of our soldiers and those of our coalition partners at risk.
Because refraining from using one type of bomb is gonna ensure a "terra-ist" victory, or commie victory, or illegal immigrant victory, or which every enemy Eurasia is at war with at the moment. Why don't we try equipping our soldiers with actual body armor and IED resistant vehicles, and then worry about whether or not a lack of cluster bombs will endanger our fighting men and women?
Ah, then we find that the Bush Administration, SURPRISE!, might have another reason to oppose this life-saving ban. They've been using cluster bombs to fight...well...AQI, the Insurgents, whoever...in Iraq for years, and Gawd knows, we can't do anything which might hamper Dubya's exercise in prideful ignorance in the Middle East.
For the record, Obama has come out in support of a ban on cluster bombs, while Hilary has not. Screw all those little kids, right Hil? If they were Americans, they'd be young or a minority, so they would probably be voting for Obama anyway. Way to be a leader....

Clinton...Exit Stage Left
Alright Tye, I get the point.
So I return from my hiatus a hair's breadth before Tye's editorial ax falls. My apologies Readers, now successfully-resolved medical issues prompted my absence, and I fell out of my favorite habit. It has been a drab 3 weeks without my time here, and honestly, my newfound productivity at work has made my employers suspicious. Its past time to get back to it.
On to what matters.
Who is this Hillary Clinton-person and what the hell is she doing in the race at this point? I think its fairly obvious, as so many have noted, that Obama will be the Democratic Nominee, but the noise is getting a little angry. I have yet to hear a convincing argument for her remaining in the competition, and once you begin basing the success of your candidacy on the tasteless, tragic hope (can we even call that a hope?) that your opponent might be assassinated, I'm going to just say that you have lost. You are out of you mind to believe anything further she does in this primary campaign is for the benefit of anyone other than Hillary Clinton. I fear that there is nowhere else for the Democratic primary to go but down, and Hillary is definitly playing the anchor in this play. I've been hearing a great deal of rhetoric being thrown in Obama's direction, and I have to assume that it would be easier for him to battle John McBush without the point of Clinton's knife, metaphorically speaking, pressed against his back.

Time to Call a Spade a Spade
Let's be honest people, unless Hillary rolls out another 40-60 superdelegates in the next week or two, her mathematical chances at taking the nomination are all but over. So what the hell is she still doing giving stump speeches and campaigning around the nation? Why can't she just give it up? Because she is too smart and keen on the political workings to be defused by one defeat. I'm sure she has studied the history books and you don't have to look very far (Reagan '76 and Hart '84) to find examples of those who were strong losers in an election and then became strong front-runners in future races.
She will be one of the strongest losing candidates that our political playing field has seen for a long while. And I fully believe she knows that this race is over, "I will work my heart out for the nominee of the Democratic Party to make sure we have a Democratic president" were the exact words out of her mouth last night after winning in a landslide victory in West Virginia. As a quick aside, the primary in WVa wasn't even a battleground until Hillary declared it so last week and the results of that election were known months in advance, so those results shouldn't scare anyone in the Obama camp.
What Hillary is doing is setting herself up nice for the 2012 or 2016 run to the White House. She is getting experience in organizing a nationwide campaign and setting the seeds in local communities, recruiting volunteers and organizers that will no doubt benefit her next run for the office. These are all lofty and altruistic goals but hopefully the tone of her current campaign will not divide the Democrats and Independents enough to see John McCain into the White House. That could be her biggest mistake in continuing this campaign. If the Democratic voters feel she betrayed the party to further her own goals (by dividing the vote and wasting precious general election campaign time) she may negate her chances for the future.
So while I won't say Hillary should step down, it is time to regear your statements and views towards the other candidate, it is time to uplift and fulfill the Democratic party. Divisiveness should not be tolerated, no matter how valuable the personal goal is, this election is too important for American's around the world to have mudslinging and stereotypes sway the voters minds.

How Close Is The Democratic Primary?
I sat around and watched a little about the Democratic Primaries in North Carolina and Indiana last night. Obama took a pretty sound victory in North Carolina and Clinton managed to just squeak out a win in Indiana. So I started thinking about how close this primary was and what it would take for each candidate to win the primary. It turns out that this race isn't as close as the media would have you believe.
One of the major issues muddying up the Democratic landscape is the large body of "superdelegates" who have yet to throw their hat in the ring for one candidate or another. Currently Clinton leads in pledged superdelegates, but by a slight margin. To make my analysis easier I assumed that Obama and Clinton would split the remaining 277 superdelegate votes (139C, 138O). If this turns out to be the case the race for the nomination is not nearly as close as I had previously thought.
Taking the assumption that the candidates will split the remaining supers leaves 5 states (WV, OR, SD, KY, MT) and Puerto Rico to contribute their votes. For Obama to win the nomination he needs just 24% of the votes from each state. That means Hillary will have to muster more than 76% in every single contest left to be able to keep Obama from reaching that 2,025 threshold and securing the nomination. Interestingly enough, even if Clinton does receive that large of a turnout, she will not have clinched the nomination as she will have only 1,986 delegates.
So to me the race seems far out of hand for Clinton. That is, unless she knows something I don't, like how many unpledged superdelegates are going to vote for her. Even then she would need a massive amount of the remaining superdelegate votes to make this race go her way. Can someone please sit down with both the candidates, run over the numbers and then make an informed decision as to whether this process should continue, or would the voters be better served with a candidate to support against the GOP nomination.

The aftermath of last nights primary in PA is still being discussed obviously. Joe Scar, on Morning Joe this morning, was still acting like a drunken frat boy at a lingerie show. He just obviously can't contain his Pat Buchanan-like joy at the thought of the Dem race continuing for a few more months. Hey, I understand, I would be grinning too if the Rethugs were ripping each other apart. But lets discuss this victory in the proper context.
Hillary won by 10 percentage points, perhaps less, gaining somewhere between 6-10 delegates, depending on who's math you look at. Now, after last night, Obama as 1484 pledged delegates to Clinton's 1330, which still has Obama ahead by 154 pledged delegates, which does not take into account the slow bleed of supers who have been joining Barack, and in some cases, leaving Hillary. An 154 delegate lead is pretty substantial, especially when you consider that there are only 242 delegates left to be won from Indiana, North Carolina, and Puerto Rico. So while Clinton did win PA, and should be congratulated for the victory, I feel like I need to tell some of the talking heads that a 10 delegate pickup is a pretty small battle in this war for the nomination. Clinton did not deliver a crushing blow last night, she narrowly dodged the blow that would have ended her campaign.

Hopefully we'll find some space for a dash of that "objectivity" I've heard of as well.

STFU
So Hillary Clinton has been driving me nuts these past few days. (Full disclosure: I'm definitely an Obama supporter, and I don't pretend to not have a horse in this race, so get your grains of salt ready.) Conflict and controversy suddenly erupted late last week over comments Obama made at a private fund raiser.
You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them.And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
Honestly, that seems like a fairly candid assessment of the possible sentiments of some Americans. Its not the rosiest picture of the American Electorate, but I think we have had enough happiness and sunshine in the face of Reality from Bush and Company for the past 7 years.
Is is crazy to posit that perhaps certain American might feel that their government is some big, burdensome, faceless entity which lacks compassion and understanding when it comes the the realities of their lives? Might they feel that the only way for them to affect change within the system is to focus on certain issues, like gun laws or abortion, as their most likely chance for a win, and to vote exclusively on that issue? Hell, I think we just described a majority of the electorate, just substitute "gun laws or abortion" with "Iraq, the economy, D.C. corruption, etc."
Now Clinton is claiming that those remarks are somehow "demeaning" and "out of touch." I understand that this is a campaign, and distinctions need to be made, but Gawd! Clinton spokesman Steve Schmidt:
It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking.Is this for real? This is the subject of 24 hour news coverage? Bush admits he "approved" of his top aides discussing exactly how and to what extent to torture specific individuals, and we labast Obama for discussing the sentiments of American Voters and asking for a glass of orange juice. Holy hell.
My point is, if this Barack guy wasn't running for president, would these statements be condemned in this way? I believe that Clintons' advisers aren't sitting around watching CNN, seeing these comments, and exclaiming "Shit! Listen to this pompous ass! Can you believe anyone could be THAT out of touch?" No, I bet the conversation went something like:
"Hey, someone give me the latest printout of everything Obama has said over the past 3 days. Ok, lets see here...nothing...nothing...Oh!...wait, no, thats pretty good...damn...wait! We can make this sound like hes some kind of snob or something! Someone hand me a thesaurus and call ABC, I need another word for stuck up...elitist...now we're talking."
This is not constructive, this is not revealing, this is just stupid. I know, I know, its how these things go. But if Clinton is attempting to recast herself as something other than a D.C. political elitist (read: the same ol' damn thing), this is not helping her cause.

Clinton's Pants Aflame, No One Notices (Updated)
Freakin hilarious post at Kos by Tripletee. This is a reference to the recent uproar over some claims Clinton made about her international experiences which turned out to be slightly less than true. Clinton originally claimed, on several instances, that a trip to Bosnia as the First Lady read like a Rambo movie. Running from sniper fire and ducking into armored convoys etc. But oops, there were, you know, video cameras and (gasp) other people on that trip, and they remember a slightly different version. Poems and photo-opps, rather than bullets and adrenaline.
Ok, now why does this matter?
Clinton has based her campaign for the nations highest offices upon the notion that she possesses the greatest depth of knowledge and experience, stemming from her years in the White House at Bill's side. She has argued that Obama is unfit for that office because he has not crossed that infamous "commander-in-chief threshold," whatever that may be. Yet, if she is fudging the facts on her record, in the area that is supposedly her biggest strength, does that not raise some important questions about her qualifications and character?
Edit: Further evidence of Hillary maybe, kinda exaggerating her accomplishments.

Obama's Terrible, Awful, Campaign-Crippling Streak Continues
So Obama's "slump" continues, with wins in Wyoming and Mississippi. Thats 26 additional pledged delegates to Clinton's 19 from those contests. Solid victories as well, he picked up 61% of the votes in both states to Clinton's 38% and 37%. Obama has increased his delegate lead over Clinton to 131, and with the remaining states expected to split more or less evenly, the math is becoming more and more difficult for Clinton. Pennsylvania might trend a little more towards Hillary, but it doesn't appear that a victory for her there would numerically make a significant dent in Obama's lead.
And with Clinton's campaign becoming more and more like an offshoot of the "McBush for Preznit" movement, Obama doesn't have anywhere to go but up.

Hillary Campaigning...For McBush
McCain, as the presumptive Repug nominee, has a few solid months here to sharpen his claws and prepare his voodoo dolls and dark, smoking fires (in accordance to Republican tradition) for the general election. So we should not be surprised to see venom and bile, in true R style, thrown at both Democrat candidates.
Strong responses, and perhaps some attacks of their own, are to be expected from the Good Guys. After all, being able to weather and respond to the Conservative poo-flinging is an absolute necessity for a Dem nominee. Obama, riding his vast wave of voter turnout, fund raising, delegate count, primary wins...ok, his big ol' wave of "Kick Ass-ity," has been the obvious recipient of a great deal of this misplaced self-loathing from the rightwing nut houses and retirement homes.
But a strange story hit the wire today. Apparently

March 4th Primary Results
Big night last night at the polls. The Republican nominee looks to be locked up, with McCain taking all 4 primaries last night and mathematically eliminating the Huckster. I'm a little sad. I would have loved to see the GOP attempt to justify running a candidate, like Huckabee, who denies almost every established scientific truth in the name of Gawd, and who believes we need to amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage and a few other equally crazy positions. It would have been fun to see GW's vision of a unified GOP/Christocrat ticket cause the Republican Party to go down forever in a ball of flames, scandal, and shame. Alas, it is not to be. But fear not, Lovers of Truth and Sanity, McBush is still more than capable of destroying his party, and it remains a near certainty that no candidate running as the Second Coming of Bush, on a platform of No More Jobs and Tons More War, will ever win a spelling bee, much less the highest office in the land.
On to the news that matters, the Dems. Ok, so I am an admitted Obama supporter, just for the sake of full disclosure. So last night was a little tough for me to take. Obama looked poised to sweep Texas, which would have made it extremely difficult for Clinton to justify staying in the race. Yet, results via cnn.com:
Ohio: Clinton 54%(62 delegates) - Obama 44%(46 delegates)
Rhode Island: Clinton 58%(12) - Obama 40%(8)
Texas: Clinton 51%(16) - Obama 48%(10) ***Caucus Results Still Pending***
Vermont: Clinton 39%(6) - Obama 59%(9)
Not quite the Obama hammer-blow most folks were looking for. Clinton is a tough ol' gal, and she's not going anywhere without a fight. Obviously, Ohio was a big win for her, and RI was an unexpected windfall. That state was going to Obama, according to the ever-fallible Conventional Wisdom. Obama dominated VT, as was expected.
Texas is the big story. An incredibly close race, and the full results are still in the works. From my amateur understanding, Hillary took the overall majority in TX, but Obama may have "won" the state. We're still waiting on the results of the caucus to determine the final delegate allocation, but the talk is that Obama might actually walk away with more delegates, as he won the more populated precincts with more delegates to offer. This is still an unclear point as of now, as the results of delegate assignments are still coming in. In either case, Obama led the race before March 4th by 150 delegates, and after Clinton's wins last night, he still leads by something around 140 delegates. And there are only few hundred left to assign, so if the split continues to be 50/50, it will be extremely difficult for Clinton to close the gap. Hillary won some big states last night, but states don't get you the nomination, delegates do, and right now, Obama is flush.

Pro-Hillary Group Running False Ads in Texas
FactCheck.org just busted the Hillary campaign running a false ad in Texas. In the ad the narrator says Barack's plan won't cover 15 million Americans while Hillary's would cover every American. The source for the stat is a 2/14/2008 article on FactCheck.org about the two candidates health plans. FactCheck.org have said, "we quoted independent experts who predict that Obama's plan would leave out 15 million or more who would choose to go without coverage, but we also said that even Clinton's mandate "would leave out a million people or perhaps more, depending on how severe the penalties would be for those who don't comply.""
Small stuff, but you think these guys would be careful enough not to stir up bad press like misquoting a fact based resource.
